my cat seems hurt? don't know what to do…?

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I have two cats — 2 brothers from the same litter — they are 1 and a half years old….
the other day they both came tumbling down the stairs — head over heels…and seemed to have landed with a thump! the first cat (elvis) jumped up and was fine….his brother (sneezy) — has been acting different ever since…
He was always the first to jump up on things….counter, refrigerator, chairs, beds, etc., he was and is always into things….curious! is the word , I guess!
anyhow, since the "tumble" down the stairs with his brother, he now acts like it’s so hard to climb up on the sofa, bed, or anything……he acts like he’s climbing Mt. Everest!! He walks OK, eats OK, everything seems OK– except he’s not climbing up on things…..and seems like his back legs (or back?) may be hurt???
I haven’t noticed any werid swelling, keep petting him to feel for any abnormalties……but nothing..
He just seems hurt and I"m really concerned….

Can you translate these words into Spanish for me?

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I have to make my dream home for Spanish, but these words aren’t in the book:
Sink
Refrigerator
Bathtub
Toilet
Microwave
Stove
Counter
Mirror
Keyboard
Drumset
Dresser
Guitar
Stereo
Video games

If you can at least get one of them it would be appreciated :)

How would you answer this?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Imagine that you are going to the park with some friends and decide to pack a picnic. Your friends take some hamburger patties out of the freezer, some buns from the counter, and some cheese slices from the refrigerator. They put them in a plastic grocery bag. You probably realize that your friends made several mistakes in the way they handled the food. Make a list of at least three things you would do differently to protect yourself from food borne illness.

In 1985 what would have been the typical home wiring diagram for a 2 bedroom single story home?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

I have a home that was made in 1953 but it looks as though it’s been updated. I know it wasn’t a recent update because the outlets in the kitchen are too far apart. When I moved in there were 4 sections completely dead. The 2 back bedrooms (and I believe the hall light), The next section was refrigerator, one outlet on a stand alone counter in the kitchen. The next section was the bathroom. The last section was 2 of the 4 outlets in the living room. I was in a rush at the time I was trying to hook all this together. I found a wire with power so I used it. I have all that running on ONE circuit breaker. After taking a closer look at my panel I noticed that there is another 20 amp circuit breaker doing nothing. I’m going to trace that wire and split up what I wired. What would have been typical back then? I’m thinking I should leave the 2 bedroom outlets, hall, and bedrooms all one circuit and the single kitchen counter, refrigerator and bathroom be the second circuit. Looking for an old time electrician who remembers how these homes were wired or maybe someone who has a similar house can read off what the breakers are labeled in their subpanel.
I meant to say 2 living room outlets instead of 2 bedroom outlets toward the end of the paragraph.
Yes Virgo I could certainly go down to the city and see if permits were pulled for my home. I’m not too optimistic though. I say that because the panel circuits weren’t labeled. A certified electrician would have done that and and inspector would have expected it.
virgo = Angle
Man I really need to wake up…hehe.. Angle = Angel

how do I store fresh salt bagels?

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

I buy fresh bagels from the bakery but they don’t get eaten all at once. The only ones that I cant seem to store is the salt bagels. They become soggy in a Ziploc bag on the counter and they get hard in the refrigerator. I end up throwing the left-overs away. Please help.

How many of you can relate to my dilemma?

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

BIG PROBLEM

Recently, I was diagnosed with A. A. A. D. D. -

( Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder).

This is how it manifests itself:

I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car
and decide my car needs washing.

As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail
on the porch table that I brought up from the mailbox earlier.

I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.
I lay my car keys down on the table,
put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table,
and notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table
and take out the garbage first.

But then I think, since I’m going to be near the mailbox
when I take out the garbage anyway,
I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my checkbook off the table, open it,
and see that there is only one check left.

My extra checks are in my desk in the study,
so I go inside the house to my desk,
where I find the can of Coke that I had been drinking.

I’m going to look for my checks,
but first I need to push the Coke aside
so that I don’t accidentally knock it over.
I realize the Coke is getting warm,
and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke,
a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye–
they need to be watered.

I set the Coke down on the counter,
and I discover my reading glasses
that I have been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk,
but first I’m going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter,
fill a container with water, and suddenly I spot the TV remote.
Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV,
I will be looking for the remote,
but I won’t remember that it is on the kitchen table,
so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs,
but first I will water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers,
but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back down on the table,
get some towels and wipe up the spill.
Then I head down the hall trying to remember
what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day: the driveway is flooded,

the car STILL is not washed,

the bills are not paid,

there is a warm can of Coke STILL sitting on the counter,

there is still only one check in my check book,

I can’t find the remote,

I can’t find my glasses,

and I don’t remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today,
I am really baffled, because I know I was busy all day long,
and I am really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem,
and I will try to get some help for it,
but first I will just check my e-mail.

What should I offer on this house?

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

I am going to make an offer on a house this week and would like some advice. The house has been on the market just over 14 months, it is a brand new house in a rural area. I believe the listing price started around 0k and it’s now listed for 9k. I thought about offering 5 and ask for k for closing costs and to pay for a refrigerator(it has all other appliances). Is this laughable or do you think I should start there and they will probable counter. Thanks!

What are the legal requirements for a kitchen in a rental house in PA?

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Hello, Me and my friend currently rent part of a house in Radnor Township, PA. We have a small kitchen with a mud room next to it. We hardly ever cook, and when we do its with a george foreman grill, so we don’t need the bulky stove that sits off the side of one of the counters. We really want more space to hang out, so we would like to move the (gas) oven to the mud room, without having it hooked up, along with the electric refrigerator which will be hooked up. The landlord’s only objection to this is that he doesn’t know if this will get him in trouble in an inspection because there will be no sink in there, and the oven will not be hooked up. Does anyone know if the apartment will still be rentable without the oven hooked up and the sink in another room? Are there other issues that i dont even see?

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Thanks! :D

Is it bad to bake apples…?

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

And then not store the leftovers in a refrigerator? My parents make baked apples and then leave them uncovered on the counter. Is this a bad practice? Do you run the risk of getting a food borne illness by eating apples that are baked & left out at room temperature for 24/48 hours? I have no idea.

Thanks

How to defrost sweet potatoes?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

I have whole sweet potatoes that have been frozen to keep them good longer. I’ve never frozen sweet potatoes before, so I’m not sure what is the best way to thaw them before using. Should I just put them in the refrigerator for a few days and let them slowly defrost? Should I leave them out on the counter? Should I defrost them in the microwave or with warm water? I’m not in any hurry to use them, but I’d like to use them some day!

Question about electrical outlet near a kitchen sink?

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Ok here goes…. I rent an apartment in Washington D.C. I have a single outlet (not a double) that is located 1 1/2 inches above the counter and 12 inches away from the sink. The outlet is not a GFCI outlet. Does this violate NEC? More info to add….. my refrigerator is plugged into this outlet, originally there was a GFCI outlet there but I complained about the refrigerator constantly going out because of the outlet so they came and replaced it with a regular outlet. Is this legal?

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

I always put my fruit in the refrigerator– mainly strawberries, cherries, peaches, plums. Is this the best way to store them or should they be left on the counter at room temperature? Theyre sold in the grocery store at room temp. So I’m thinking I shouldd do the same b/c maybe it’s too cold in the fridge. I don’t know. What do you usually do with your fruit? What’s the best way?

Are food service workers and mis-use of latex gloves giving you a false sense of security?

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Latex/rubber gloves are a common sight in environments where food is handled these days. But are they being used properly? Are people getting sick from their mis-use?

Well, just look closely the next time you visit a deli or any place where you can observe food service workers handling food. They’ll slice your deli choices, then grasp a germ-laden towel to wipe something. In the course of their work, they touch non-food-type surfaces such as display counter tops, slicing machine handles, refrigerator door handles, boxes/cartons of various kinds, the scale, and other surfaces that are not cleaned with the same attention given to items that come into direct contact with food.

So meat and fat residue is sitting on these surfaces to fester all day long and the workers and the public seem to think that a magical state of cleanliness is being achieved because gloves are being used.

Have you observed this? Do you feel as comfortable about "professional" food preparation?
Josh – Your point is well-taken. However, I had been wanting to add this point: Before the use of latex gloves became so commonplace, after coming in contact with any unclean item/surface, a professional food service worker would wash their hands before resuming contact with food. And this is precisely the practice to be found in large professional kitchens today such as you’d find in a hotel. The kitchen staff surely needs to touch all kinds of surfaces, but before touching food, the hands are always washed.

Why do my cat and I keep drinking out of the toilet bowl? ?

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

I have caught my cat and she was caught me — even though I leave her fresh water on the counter and even though I have bottled water in the refrigerator. It seems we both cannot stop. Why is that?

You're about to fry some bacon. Then your mother puts some already fried bacon on the counter. What do U do?

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

More detail:

You’ve taken the raw bacon out of the package and put it into the skillet. Your mother sees that you are cooking bacon so she goes to the refrigerator and pulls out some bacon she already cooked the day before and lays it on the counter beside you, telling you that there is cooked bacon already on hand.

What do you do?

A. Put the uncooked bacon in your skillet back into the package and back into the refrigerator?

B. Continue to cook the 3 strips of bacon you have pulled out? Or

C. Ask for clarification as to what she wants you to do?

This situation erupted into a dispute because I put the bacon back into the refrigerator, thinking this was what she wanted me to do. She is 79 and bordering on Alzheimer’s. I’m wondering if I’m going crazy, or is she? She has been Obsessive/Compulsive all her life. Monk is her hero. How could I have handled this situation better than by obliging her seemingly obvious request?
And I did ask her specifically, what she wanted me to do. She became incredibly defensive, claiming I was criticizing her and that she could never do anything right. I never criticize her. But as an approval seeker, she takes issue with the tiniest of things.

I’m recommending she get out more. But at 79 with immunity issues, that prescription is easier said than done.

So I think I just suck this one up and forget about it, right?

Or is this situation dysfunctional enough to warrant additional help?

Food should be defrosted in the microwave, under cold-running water, or?

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

A. under hot-running water.
B. on the kitchen counter.
C. in the refrigerator.
D. at room temperature.

How to trim a cabinet to fit a new refrigerator?

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

I haven’t had too much practice fixing much of anything that requires power tools. However, I’m pretty athletic and anticipate that if a cabinet tries to act up, I’ll scare it back into shape or yell at it. But I don’t want to be totally reactive on this project.

The cabinet I want to trim is the cabinet that is against the refrigerator and the part that houses the dishwasher. There appears to be about an inch of the side of the cabinet that protrudes past the counter top. What’s my best method of attack for gaining that extra inch?

Thank you!

Corey

Can’t keep my cat off counter & stove and out of sink.?

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I’m sick of cat hair in my sink and the houseplants on my only usable window sill getting knocked off onto the floor or spilled across the counter and stove under them. I’m also afraid she will turn on the sink or gas stove. She’s very smart and will jump or step over anything put down to deter her. Spraying her with water makes her mad at me but doesn’t deter her. She’ll knock dishes out of the sink so she can lay in it. I’ve even turned on the water while she was in it and it didn’t help. Also, the next step is for her to jump on top of the short refrigerator and then the wall cabinets to knock everything off them. I live in an apartment and I need that space to store things. I’ve had her for 9 months and she’s never done this before. She has lots of other places to sleep and climb. My cats have lots of different toys, and she has another cat to play with and they get along great, so she shouldn’t be bored. I can cover the counter with things and she just jumps on top of them and pushes them off.
She has shelves that she used to sleep on. In the shelves she can choose from open areas, a box, and a short box with a cushion. She can also sleep on the hutch of my desk which is next to a window.
I’ve tried repellent spray for other things and it did nothing.
I can’t lock my cat out of the room. It’s a big combination kitchen/dining/living room and the only other places for her to go are the bedroom and bathroom.
Compromise with the sink – maybe. Compromise with the stove?? Would you let children play with a stove when they could get seriously burns or burn the building down?
(that was supposed to say "serious burns")
